In the heart of Five Points South on Sundays at 1:00 p.m. you will find the group called Food not Bombs. They are a group bringing attention to the hunger throughout the world. Although you will not hear any comdemnation from this group on Sundays no protest signs or loud chanting.
Food not Bombs brings food made with a caring heart to the people of Southside. From home made spaghetti to chilli and fresh bread they feed anyone who would like to eat no questions asked and nothing said unless you ask. It makes for a peaceful atmosphere with many different types of people conversing over a meal.
On any given Sunday or any day in Southside for that matter you can hear the protesting and preaching from many groups. Some scream what they call the truth some angry about the government. All points of views are repersented on posters and spoken out of mouths by people on the corners of Southside all equally annoying to the average passer by.
Food not Bombs unlike any group seen out in the Five Points area were doing something constructive with their time and feeding people. By being constructive the group actually got its message out and may even have changed some minds in the process. This is something groups should take note of by not asking for money or comdemning people one may really take to your sincerity and listen to what you have to say.
Food not Bombs is a caring helping organization. Their challenge in life is to do some good and not look down on their neighbor though he may be different than them. Many in Birmingham spend their Sunday mornings hearing about Christ but do nothing which would please Him that very day. On Sunday would Christ pay 30 dollars for a meal He could eat in one bite just because the so called elite call that chef the best in town. Maybe he does have a book and a snooty personality but he still is only a glorified cook. Going there to show off your new car and jewelry only makes you shallow not glamorous and the valet is not shielding his eyes from the sun it is your plastic surgery disaster that is blinding him my love.
However the blue blooded hypocrites are not the only ones Christ may be unhappy with. Each Sunday one can see a line clear to the streets of the local all you can eat pig troughs. The only thing expanding faster than some of these people's waist line is the national debt and the only book some of these people know requires crayons. God bless America though there is more food wasted in one Sunday there than is probably consumed in a week in Haiti. Many people though have no choice but to go to these places how else are they going to satisfiy their ten year old daughter with a 36 inch waist already and their own craving for nacho cheese covered sirloin steak.
In the end as Americans we are free to make our own decisions about how we spend our Sundays. But as Americans in a free peaceful society we should take the time now and again to get out and help someone and not only live for our own self gratification in life. Follow the example set by the Food not Bombs organization and spend a Sunday afternoon being constructive with your time.
